Traditional AI technologies are more analytical in nature whereas the generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence technology that is more creative and can produce various types of content including texts, images and videos. Policies are developed hereby to guide the application of AI technologies which are expected to be increasingly used by journal authors, reviewers and editors.

For Authors

(The use of AI-assisted technologies in the writing process)

Where authors use AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, these technologies should only be used to improve readability and language of the writing and authors are responsible for reviewing and editing the result. Authors should disclose the use of AI-assisted technologies in the Copyright Assignment Form before the writing is published.

Authors should not list any AI-assisted technologies as an author or co-author both in citations and references. They are accountable for ensuring that the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work is appropriately investigated and that the work is original.

For Reviewers

(The use of AI-assisted technologies in the journal peer review process)

When a researcher is invited to review another researcher’s paper, the manuscript must be treated confidentially. Any part of the submitted manuscript should not be uploaded into an AI-assisted tool as this may violate the authors’ confidentiality and proprietary rights.

Reviewers should not upload their peer review report into an AI-assisted tool, even if it is just for the purpose of improving language and readability. AI-assisted technologies should not be used by reviewers to assist in the scientific review of a paper at all. The reviewer is responsible and accountable for the content of the review report.

Reviewers should note that authors are allowed to use AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, but only to improve the language and readability of their paper and with the appropriate disclosure.

For Editors

(The use of AI-assisted technologies in the journal editorial process)

A submitted manuscript must be treated confidentially and should not be uploaded into an AI-assisted tool as this may violate the authors’ confidentiality and proprietary rights.

This confidentiality requirement is extended to all communications about the manuscript including any notification or decision letters. Editors should not upload their letters into an AI-assisted tool, even if it is just for the purpose of improving language and readability.

AI-assisted technologies should not be used by editors to assist in the evaluation or decision-making process of a manuscript. The editors are accountable for the editorial process, the final decision and communication to the authors.

Editors should note that authors are allowed to use AI-assisted technologies in the writing process before submission, but only to improve the language and readability of their paper and with the appropriate disclosure.
