  • Research Participation Request: Understanding the experience of long-term recovery for K-12 schools from extreme events

    Information:
Our project aims to better understand the experience of long-term recovery for K-12 schools from extreme events. More specifically, we aim to learn about the challenges to recovery, what schools need to recover, what resources they do use, and to identify what works and what doesn’t in facilitating a school’s recovery from a disaster or incidence of violence. To do so, we are interested in talking to folks who are or have worked in schools that experienced an extreme event. People from any number of roles from teachers, facilities personnel, guidance counsellor, principals, or even folks at the district level would be useful for us to interview as long as they can speak to some aspect of the school’s recovery. Interviews would take about an hour to an hour and a half, and can take place whenever is convenient for the interviewee, including after business hours. The interviews will be kept confidential, and participants will not be named in any of the outputs of the research. The interviews will be used in academic research outputs (including journal articles and conference presentations) and to inform development of recovery resources for K-12 schools recovering from extreme events.

    Special Issue

Innovation, leadership, sustainability, and system change in education in the Caribbean: Comparative and international perspectives

This special issue of Comparative and International Education/Éducation Comparée et Internationale (CIE/ÉCI) provides an opportunity to mobilize research completed on innovation, leadership, sustainability, and system change in the Caribbean by Caribbean researchers and/or in partnership with other researchers, including those from Canada. Researchers and universities in the Caribbean have maintained long-standing partnerships with Canadian researchers and universities. The special issue provides an opportunity for south-south or south-north research collaboration and mobilization. A focus on comparative and international education provides opportunities for researchers and educational system leaders in both the Caribbean and Canadian contexts (and beyond) to learn from each other and to harness their collective efforts for improved educational outcomes for all students. The overall objective of the special issue is to build or enhance capacity for innovation, leadership, and sustainability in education systems by mobilizing research on promising and evidence-based solutions from the Caribbean. The special issue will enable scholars and educational practitioners to share research findings that can inform and contribute to innovation in the region and beyond. It will also provide a forum for dialogue to explore how stakeholders working at different levels and across different countries are addressing educational barriers and pursuing opportunities to improve teaching, learning, and school leadership. The special issue will facilitate research exchange and knowledge mobilization within and between global south/north institutions.

This special issue will focus on how teachers, school leaders, and system administrators can nurture innovation and sustainability in education in the Caribbean from a ground-up approach (i.e., teacher-led innovation projects) and top-down approach (i.e., system and school strategic prioritization and facilitation of innovation projects).

  • Call for Manuscripts: Educational Research for Social Change

    Information:
This publication will expand the discourse around student success, student engagement, and student belonging in higher education. Students’ motivation to complete courses and finish their degrees has waned some in the years since the pandemic. With the emergence and increase in distance education programs, technology has helped translate the classroom environment into the digital sphere in order to reach students nationwide, but this is not enough to support the completion of a degree. The effective integration of programming and initiatives in higher education that promote students’ sense of belonging directly impacts their desire to complete their degree programs. Reaching the students is one task but retaining them and supporting them up until graduation requires new and effective techniques that are centered in student engagement and student success. Administrators, faculty, and staff are looking for immediate practices to implement and embed in their courses, campus culture, and collaborative efforts across departments. The teachings and techniques presented in this publication will prepare higher education professionals to design and develop a student experience that motivates and supports students in their mission to complete their degree.
